| Observation of Direct Photons in Central Pb-Pb Collisions at 158 A GeV |

The invariant direct photon multiplicity for central 158 AGeV 208Pb+208Pb collisions. The error
bars indicate the combined statistical and systematical errors. Data points with downward arrows indicate unbounded
90% CL upper limits. Results of several direct photon measurements for proton induced reactions have been scaled
